GTA 6: the May 12 Trailer 3 letdown
On May 12, 2026, a large chunk of the GTA community was convinced Rockstar would finally unveil Trailer 3 of GTA 6. In the end, absolutely nothing happened.
No teaser. No announcement. Not even a tweet about GTA 6. Instead, Rockstar simply talked about a Red Dead Online update.
The most interesting part of the story is that Rockstar never promised anything in the first place. The whole theory came straight from the community.
A theory that looked credible
A few elements had convinced fans.
First, Rockstar usually drops its big trailers on a Tuesday, and May 12, 2026 happened to land exactly on that day.
Second, Take-Two's quarterly earnings call is scheduled for May 21. Back in 2025, Trailer 2 of GTA 6 had been revealed nine days before that same financial meeting. Many fans connected the dots.
The theory grew even bigger after a Game Informer tease mentioning a mysterious game "in four words" that would land on the magazine's cover.
For fans, that lined up perfectly with "Grand Theft Auto VI."
The Game Informer cold shower
On May 12, Game Informer finally revealed its cover: The Blood of Dawnwalker, the new RPG from studio Rebel Wolves.
No connection to GTA 6.
Facing the backlash, Brian Shea, the magazine's executive editor, reminded everyone on Reddit that Game Informer had never teased GTA 6 in the first place.
Even so, part of the community accused Rockstar and the press of "feeding the hype."
Rockstar sticks with its silence playbook
While the theories exploded on Reddit and X, Rockstar stayed completely silent about GTA 6.
That strategy is nothing new. The studio has always favored tightly controlled communication around its big games, notably for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two's CEO, only ever mentioned a marketing ramp-up "this summer," without giving a precise date for a new trailer.
The next checkpoint
The community is now watching May 21, 2026, the date of Take-Two's next quarterly earnings call.
Even if an announcement is still possible, the real start of the marketing campaign looks more likely to land during the summer.
With a release scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar still has plenty of time before ramping up its GTA 6 communication.
