GTA 6: Sony pushes PS4 players onto PS5
Just a few months out from the long-awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, set for November 19, Sony is already ramping up its marketing strategy around the new generation of consoles.
According to multiple reports relayed on social media, Sony has reportedly sent promotional emails to PS4 owners, urging them to buy a PS5 before GTA 6 lands. The company is reportedly pointing out that Rockstar Games' upcoming blockbuster won't be available on PlayStation 4 at all.
Sony is going all-in on GTA 6
In those promotional messages, Sony reportedly reminds players that the PS5 is the best way to experience GTA 6 from day one. The goal is clear: convince the millions of players still on PS4 to finally make the jump to current-gen.
And let's be real, GTA 6 is probably the biggest launch in the history of gaming. With years of massive anticipation behind it, many analysts believe the game could drive a huge spike in PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales.
PS4 is officially left behind
This campaign also confirms a wider trend: the PS4 generation is gradually winding down for big AAA productions. Like several recent games before it, GTA 6 will lean exclusively on the capabilities of current-gen consoles.
Rockstar is going after a more alive, denser, and technically much more ambitious open world than GTA V. The kind of experience that would need a level of power simply out of reach on Sony's older console.
A historic launch on the horizon
Set for November 19, GTA 6 is already pegged as the gaming event of the year. Every drop of new information sparks a massive reaction online, and Sony clearly intends to surf that hype to accelerate PS5 sales.
The open question is whether this strategy will be enough to convince the last PS4 holdouts to make the jump to current-gen before the game launches.
