On October 7, 2026, IGN published the full transcript of its interview with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and co-studio head at Rockstar North. It was recorded while he played GTA 6 for about 30 minutes, in a session that was not a scripted demo. It is not a new presentation, but the complete detail of what was shown.
More open missions
According to Rob Nelson, Rockstar made a conscious effort to open missions up when the story allows: several ways out of a building, a chase that keeps going even if you leave the suggested route. Key story moments stay framed.
Car theft, reworked
According to Nelson, one-button hotwiring is gone. A scanner on the phone shows whether a car is locked, alarmed or fitted with a tracker, and what it is worth to a fence. A car with a tracker has to be driven fast, or it pings its location to the police.
Police that remember
Nelson explains that a crime is only reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off. Officers remember what the player is wearing: changing outfits lowers the heat. You can also split Jason and Lucia up or switch cars to lose the police.
A criminal profile and an evolving relationship
He also describes a Criminal Profile, different from Red Dead Redemption 2's honor system, which tracks the player's behavior and shapes how the world reacts and how the story plays out. The relationship between Jason and Lucia evolves through shared activities (pool, mini golf, kayaking, robberies) and the player's choices. Romance is not forced, but ignoring messages can affect the relationship.
Life in Leonida
- safehouses closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's camps, with weapon and outfit storage and a gym;
- barbers, gyms to build strength, and weight gain if you overeat;
- an economy that matters: some story steps require earning money first.
GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
