Rockstar Games announced on November 3 that Grand Theft Auto VI pre-loading opens on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, two days earlier than the November 12 date it gave in June, when pre-orders opened. The studio also put a number on the download for the first time: up to 212 GB of available space, depending on your console.
Pre-loading lets you install the game before launch so it's ready to play on November 19. It doesn't unlock anything early: the game stays locked until release day. Here's when it starts on each console, how much space to free up and how to start the download, whether you bought the game digitally or in a box.
Pre-load times on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The two consoles don't open at the same moment. On PS5, pre-loading starts at midnight local time, time zone by time zone. On Xbox Series X|S, it opens everywhere at once, at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10.
| PS5 | Xbox Series | |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Nov 10, midnight local time | Nov 10, 12 a.m. GMT |
| UK | Nov 10, 12 a.m. | Nov 10, 12 a.m. |
| US East Coast | Nov 10, 12 a.m. | Nov 9, 7 p.m. |
| US West Coast | Nov 10, 12 a.m. | Nov 9, 4 p.m. |
Pre-loading is open to anyone who bought or pre-ordered the digital version, Standard Edition ($79.99) or Ultimate Edition ($99.99). The Ultimate Edition is sold digitally only.
212 GB: how much space to free up
Rockstar's figure is a maximum: up to 212 GB of available space depending on the device, with no separate number for PS5 and Xbox. It's the space you need to start the pre-load. Rockstar hasn't said whether another download will be needed on launch day, so leave yourself some room beyond 212 GB.
How much that leaves depends on the console:
- PS5 (825 GB): about 667 GB usable, so GTA 6 takes roughly a third of it.
- PS5 Slim (1 TB) and PS5 Pro (2 TB): more room to spare.
- Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB usable.
- Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable. GTA 6 alone takes more than half of it.
To make room, sort your installed games by size in the console's storage settings. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can also move games to an external USB drive to free up internal space, but they can't run them from it: GTA 6 has to be installed on the internal storage, an M.2 SSD (PS5) or an expansion card (Xbox).
Then there's the download itself. 212 GB is roughly 1,700 gigabits: in theory, that's close to five hours on a 100 Mbps connection, more than fifteen hours at 30 Mbps and about half an hour on 1 Gbps fiber. Real speeds also depend on Sony's and Microsoft's servers.
How to pre-load GTA 6
Digital version. If automatic downloads are on and the console stays in rest mode (PS5) or standby (Xbox), the pre-load can start on its own. Otherwise, start it manually: from the game library on PS5, or from My games & apps or the game's Microsoft Store page on Xbox.
Code-in-box version. The box only holds a download code, with no disc. Retailers hand them out from November 12. Once you redeem the code on the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store, the download starts like any digital copy, so box buyers can pre-load from November 12.
What we don't know yet: the unlock time
Rockstar hasn't given the November 19 unlock time. Some retailers point to midnight, but nothing is official. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 unlocked digitally at midnight local time, region by region: if Rockstar follows the same pattern, pre-loaded copies will open at 12 a.m. local time on November 19.
It's also unclear whether a patch will be needed on day one. Rockstar hasn't said, which is one more reason to keep some space free.
And on November 19
On launch day, Rockstar will add a printable cover art poster and a map of Leonida to the game's official site, as a free download. A double-sided printed version follows shortly after on the Rockstar Store, for $0.99 or free with any purchase.
The Vintage Vice City Pack is still included on both editions for anyone who pre-orders or buys the game before November 20.
The calendar to launch
- November 10: pre-loading opens (midnight local time on PS5, 12 a.m. GMT on Xbox).
- November 12: code-in-box versions reach retailers.
- November 19: Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- November 20: the Vintage Vice City Pack offer ends.
There's no PC version, so there's no PC pre-load either: GTA 6 is console-only at launch. Our release date page covers launch day in detail.
